I had the chance to read this book several weeks ago and it was amazing! Not just good, but a "I couldn't put this book down" amazing. It took me about three days to read this book. It took my wife one day to read it.
The book by Marieke Nikamp is a realistic drama book that centers around a school shooting set in a typical high school. During a school assembly that occurs every year, a former student walks in and executes the principal and other teachers. Before coming in, the student padlocks and chains all of the doors to the auditorium and around the school; trapping students in the auditorium with the shooter. The shooter has entered with a purpose to exact revenge and pain upon the staff and students of the school, and no one is really safe.
The story unfolds through different perspectives of students connected to the shooter: an old girl friend, the shooter's sister, the sister's girlfriend, the girl friend's brother. The different perspectives unfold the different emotions and experiences that give some insight to the shooter, but also leaves many different questions. You will constantly be wondering what will happen, can anyone be saved, can the shooter be stopped. The answers will not be what you expect.
The story also uses social media reactions and statements from those outside of the school that reflect the confused feelings everyone goes through when a horrible tragedy like this impacts a community.
This is not a light read. As why wife stated that this story will "gut you." If you are looking for a comedy, wait and read this a different time. This is a gripping drama that will pull you in and not let go until it ends.
